Bucket Wheel Dredger

The excavation mechanism of a bucket wheel dredger is a rotating bucket wheel with teeth at the front end, also known as a ‘bucket type reamer’. Its work efficiency is higher than that of a cutter suction dredger in viscous, plastic soil and soil with reed roots and stems. It is mainly used for dredging and reclamation projects in rivers, lakes, land reclamation, and water conservancy and hydropower projects.

General Description

Bucket wheel dredger is a new type of ship evolved based on the principle of action of cutter suction dredger. Except for the difference in excavation mechanism, the other configurations are similar to cutter suction dredger. The rotation axis of the bucket wheel of a bucket wheel dredger is at a certain angle to the support arm, while the rotation axis of the cutter head of a cutter suction dredger is parallel to the support arm. Bucket wheel dredgers have strong ability to excavate and cut soil layers. It is a combination of land excavator wheels and cutter suction dredgers, which improves production efficiency and reduces energy consumption during excavation and lateral movement.

Working Principle

The bucket wheel dredger first cuts the riverbed soil through the bucket wheel, fusing the cut soil with water to form a high concentration mud medium. Then, the mud is directly transported to the suction head, which is located at the top of the suction pipe. Through the suction effect of a centrifugal mud pump, a certain degree of vacuum is generated in the suction pipe, which is then pressurized by the mud pump to discharge the mud into the discharge pipe, and finally discharged to the mud barge or transported to the discharge yard.

The bucket wheel dredger uses positioning piles, positioning pile lifting and lowering devices, and lateral winches to position the dredger, achieving longitudinal forward and lateral swing of the hull, in order to continuously excavate the riverbed soil.

Main Features

The fully hydraulic bucket wheel dredging dredger adopts a split structure, which is easy to disassemble and transport. The overall design is reasonable, the operation is simple, the durability is strong, and the work efficiency is high.

The advantage of bucket wheel dredgers is that they can complete suction, transportation, and unloading of mud in one go without the need for secondary transportation, thereby reducing operating costs and labor costs. They are ideal equipment for underwater excavation.
